Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is working with the private sector to develop biogas-based food waste processing technology as an environmentally friendly waste management innovation while providing a renewable energy source.

Researcher from the BRIN Environmental Research and Clean Technology Center, Prasetiyadi, spoke of having succeeded in developing a biogas reactor that can process food waste into methane gas to be used as an energy source.

"This reactor is a real form of BRIN's support and commitment in supporting the achievement of SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) through collaboration with various parties," he noted in a statement from BRIN in Jakarta, Friday.

He said the reactor was already operating well and could produce methane gas for various needs, including kitchen use in the partner company.

He explained that the reactor uses the chemical process of methanogenesis through which bacteria from food and animal waste in the reactor reduce the waste and produce methane gas (CH4), which can be used for cooking and other needs in the company.

The food waste processing reactor was developed in response to the large amount of food waste produced by the company's employee lunch facility.

According to Prasetiyadi, the innovation supports more environmentally friendly waste management and contributes to the use of sustainable renewable energy.

He expressed hope that the collaboration would serve as a model for more efficient and environmentally friendly waste management for other companies in Indonesia.
