Speaking at the summit commemorative event of the 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities at Ismail Marzuki Park in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, Gibran urged all relevant stakeholders to pay closer attention to the fulfillment of the rights of disabled citizens.
He underscored that the rights of persons with disabilities are put forward in Law No. 8 of 2016.
"Now, it is the matter of genuinely implementing it (the law) in real life. It is important for us to work hand in hand to exercise monitoring in the field," he pointed out.
Furthermore, the vice president highlighted that the Disabled People Law has been complemented with 10 derivative regulations that promote the need to equally fulfill the rights of people with disabilities.
The provisions also touch upon the discrimination, empowerment, protection, and accessibility of persons with disabilities, he added.
Gibran then pushed for enhancing disabled citizens' accessibility in various sectors, such as education, health, employment, public facilities, financing, and legal services.
To that end, the VP called for stepping up cross-sector collaboration among ministries and other state institutions, regional governments, the private sector, and community organizations.
The event, organized by the Social Affairs Ministry, featured art and cultural performances, including the collaboration between the Tohpati Orchestra and disabled musicians, a poetry recital by actress Happy Salma, and a Saman Dance by 11 deaf students from Surabaya, East Java.
Moreover, the ministry organized a bazaar and exhibition that displayed artwork by disabled persons and offered products made by disabled micro, small, and medium enterprise actors.
