"We have a strong commitment to enforce the law on the infringement of intellectual property (rights)," the Law Ministry's Director General of Intellectual Property, Razilu, stated here on Thursday.
Razilu said that the DJKI provides IP protection services to the public, especially those who create and produce original products. He affirmed that products can be registered with the DJKI, which acts as the authority in the IP field.
The government then provides protection for products and IP that have been registered if it receives a report of plagiarism that is harmful to the owners.
"Those who have registered (their products) for intellectual property are protected, and anyone who commits counterfeiting should be acted against. That is the function of the DJKI," he emphasized.
He explained that the DJKI's actions, such as the destruction of counterfeit goods, aim to provide lessons and deter violators.
"This is an important education for the perpetrators of violations in the IP sector so that they will no longer commit violations," Razilu stated.
Earlier, the DJKI destroyed several counterfeit products, resulting from 12 complaints of violations submitted by brand owners. The counterfeit goods that were confiscated comprised generators, drill bits, bags, shoes, luggage, baby pacifiers, and others that used fake or imitation brands.
By Law No. 20 of 2016, some 11 out of the 12 violations are considered trademark violations, while the other one is an industrial design violation in line with Law No. 31 of 2000.
DJKI destroyed the counterfeit products by burning or wrecking them using hammers.
