Jakarta (ANTARA) - Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi has ensured that public transportation and its supporting infrastructure are fully prepared to serve the public during the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays.

He stated that 32,130 buses and 113 supporting terminals have been readied to accommodate 1.2 million passengers.

In addition, 159 ferries, with a combined capacity of 2.3 million passengers, are set to operate.

"The prepared infrastructure includes 11 ferry crossing ports, 29 movable bridge piers, two pontoon piers, and 17 plengsengan piers," he remarked on Monday (Dec 16).

"Plengsengan" refers to a type of pier that allows the passage of vehicles and has a heavier load capacity than a pontoon pier or movable bridge.

He also announced that 765 ships and 32 patrol boats, with a total capacity of 180,287 seats, have been prepared for sea transportation. Additionally, 264 seaports are ready to operate.

He also urged the public to stay informed about weather conditions while planning their trips for the year-end holidays.

"We will provide regular updates through the media to help the public better plan their travels," Dudy said.

The Ministry of Transportation expects the first peak of outbound travelers for Christmas and New Year to occur on December 21, 2024, with 10.99 percent of total travelers, and the second peak on December 28, 2024, with 10.77 percent.
