Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) urged people to stay alert for coastal flooding that is predicted to hit most coastal areas in the coming week with a water level of 1-1.5 meters.

"The potential coastal flooding is due to the maximum sea level rise affected by the new moon phenomenon on December 31, 2024," the BMKG's Director of Maritime Meteorology Eko Prasetyo said in Jakarta on Sunday.

The BMKG team found that based on water level data and predictions on tides, coastal flooding could potentially occur in several coastal areas.

Those areas include, among others, Aceh's Meulaboh city (December 31–January 3), Jakarta's north coast areas (December 31–January 3), and North Kalimantan's Nunukan, Tarakan, and Tanjung Selor (December 31–January 1).

According to Prasetyo, in addition to potentially disrupting community activities because of inundation by floodwater, it also has the potential to disrupt loading and unloading activities at ports and the smooth running of activities of salt pond businesses as well as fishery businesses in coastal areas.

Earlier, the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Jakarta asked residents in coastal areas in Jakarta to remain alert for coastal flooding until January 3, 2025.

Executive head of the Jakarta BPBD, Isnawa Adji, said in Jakarta on Thursday that coastal flooding could potentially occur in coastal areas of North Jakarta, such as Kamal Muara, Kapuk Muara, Penjaringan, Pluit, Ancol, Kamal, Marunda, Cilincing, Kalibaru, and Muara Angke.

According to Adji, the Tanjung Priok Meteorology Station of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning against coastal flooding, which will remain in effect from December 26, 2024, to January 3, 2025.
