Jakarta (ANTARA) - The 26 ships operated by the state-owned shipping company PT Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia (Pelni) can transport up to five million passengers annually, according to Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, also known as AHY.

“Pelni’s passenger ships, including KM Labobar, can carry up to five million passengers each year," AHY remarked after witnessing the departure of 703 passengers aboard the KM Labobar ship at Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta on Sunday, Dec 29.

In addition to Pelni’s ships, the Ministry of Transportation has provided 50 passenger ships to accommodate homebound travelers during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

During his inspection, the minister spoke with several passengers, most of whom were heading to eastern Indonesia, including Makassar, Ambon, Manokwari, and Nabire.

AHY praised Pelni and the crew of the KM Labobar for preparing the vessel and ensuring passengers’ safety and comfort.

"We also checked the instruments earlier, and everything is functioning well. Hopefully, we can carry out our duties effectively and serve the passengers to their destinations," he stated.

From December 11 to 29, Pelni transported 366,002 homebound travelers during the holiday period.

The busiest routes during this time were Batam–Belawan, Belawan–Batam, and Makassar–Bau Bau.

The busiest departure ports were Makassar, Ambon, and Batam.

The peak of the year-end holiday rush at Tanjung Priok Port occurred on December 23, when two ships departed with a total of 1,800 passengers.

The KM Dorolonda set sail from Jakarta with 1,200 passengers, making scheduled stops at Surabaya, Makassar, Ambon, and Bau-Bau before reaching its final destination in Papua.

Meanwhile, the KM Dobonsolo carried 600 passengers from Tanjung Priok, also heading to Papua as its final destination.
