Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta's Environment Office, responsible for overseeing garbage management for the day, announced collecting 132 tons of waste resulting from the New Year's Eve (NYE) celebrations across Jakarta.

"We earlier projected to collect 150 tons of garbage," agency head Asep Kuswanto stated here on Wednesday.

The agency chief explained that the initial estimate was based on the anticipation of handling wet waste from rain expected that night. However, the weather on NYE turned out to be clear, with no rainfall.

The 132 tons of waste collected this year represented an increase from the 130 tons gathered during the New Year's celebration in Jakarta in 2024, which was previously regarded as the highest amount ever recorded.

The Jakarta Environment Office deployed sanitation workers from 12:30 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. local time at public centers after the conclusion of NYE celebrations, ensuring that the roads were clear by sunrise.

Kuswanto noted that sanitation workers were deployed at several locations, including the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout, the National Monument, Jakarta Old Town, and Ancol Dreamland Park, where New Year celebrations in Jakarta were centered.

He also noted that the sanitation workers received support from the deployment of 68 dump trucks, 53 road-sweeping trucks, and 27 supporting vehicles for the day's operations.

The agency chief then expressed gratitude to residents flocking to the NYE celebrations in Jakarta for their contribution to maintaining a clean and garbage-free environment.

"We thank all residents who heeded our calls not to litter and to use reusable drinking bottles during the night. Such actions helped us manage the waste faster," Kuswanto remarked.
