Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Police (Polri) and the Ministry of Indonesian Migrant Workers' Protection have agreed to strengthen their cooperation in protecting Indonesian migrant workers.

This agreement was reached during a meeting between Polri Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo and Indonesian Migrant Workers' Protection Minister Abdul Kadir Karding, which took place on Thursday at the Polri Headquarters in Jakarta.

"Polri fully supports the programs of the ministry in providing protection and meeting the rights of our people who are working abroad," Prabowo affirmed.

He noted that in the meeting, they discussed the plan to establish a special desk to address issues related to illegal departures and human trafficking involving migrant workers.

He stated that Polri fully supports the plan and is ready to take action against the individuals involved.

"After this, we will hold a special meeting to make plans and further steps in terms of law enforcement," he remarked.

Furthermore, the Polri chief highlighted the importance of preventive measures, adding that Polri and the Ministry of Indonesian Migrant Workers' Protection will also step up cooperation in preventive efforts.

"We will use the desk every day to receive (and manage) reports and complaints and to evaluate our steps," he remarked.

Meanwhile, Minister Karding stated that from the identification of problems carried out by his ministry, Indonesian citizens working abroad were still affected by issues of exploitation and injustice, which also led to human trafficking.

"There are several modes of human trafficking, but the big conclusion is that there must be certain parties playing behind it. There are traffickers. There are syndicates," he stated.

Hence, he expressed gratitude to the police for its readiness to follow up on the findings from a legal perspective.
