Jakarta (ANTARA) - Transmigration areas have the potential to be developed into cattle farming regions to achieve beef and milk self-sufficiency and support the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program, according to the Ministry of Transmigration.

Deputy Minister of Transmigration Viva Yoga Mauladi stated on Wednesday that national beef production is only 370,000 tons, while demand is pegged at 770,000 tons per year, creating a shortfall of 400,000 tons.

There is also a gap of 3.7 million tons between national milk production and demand, with production recorded at 1 million tons per year and demand at 4.7 million tons.

According to Mauladi, there is significant market potential for both commodities with the implementation of the government's MBG program, which was launched on January 6.

He said that the livestock sub-sector plays a strategic role in providing animal protein, increasing the income and welfare of farmers, driving rural and regional economic ecosystems, creating jobs and businesses, and developing the food and processing industry.

To achieve beef and milk self-sufficiency, several measures need to be taken, including optimizing reproduction and strengthening cattle farmers' institutions, he added.

Mauladi mentioned that several transmigration areas have the potential for cattle farm development because they offer extensive land and abundant nature-sourced feed.

He affirmed that the ministry will collaborate with other ministries to realize this initiative so that the beef and milk self-sufficiency goals can be achieved.

In this regard, he called for participation from other parties, such as the community, academics, and non-governmental organizations, in animal husbandry to realize the goals.

"We also need to issue regulations, programs, and budget plans that are realistic, with measurable outputs," Mauladi remarked.
