The head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, said that he hoped the weather modification effort would control rainfall intensity in the two provinces.
He stated that the weather modification operation is being carried out from January 23 to January 25, 2025.
Heavy rainfall in the two provinces in the past week triggered hydrometeorological disasters in the form of floods and landslides in several areas from January 20–22.
Muhari said that the joint team in each affected area is still conducting disaster mitigation efforts, such as evacuating residents, recording victim data, and distributing logistical assistance.
Therefore, the rain potential should be handled to reduce its intensity and rainfall directed into the sea. This was done by the agency in several earlier weather modification operations.
The BNPB has recorded floods in five regions in Lampung, with damage to 14,842 homes and two deaths reported in Bandarlampung city.
Meanwhile, 264 houses and two bridges have been damaged in Central Lampung district; 629 residents displaced in Pringsewu district; 2,183 people displaced and 4,456 hectares of rice fields submerged in East Lampung district; and 18 homes damaged and 146 hectares of rice fields inundated in South Lampung district.
During the same period, infrastructures such as bridges, roads, and residences in Pekalongan, Grobogan, Kendal, Batang, and Demak districts of Central Java province have sustained damage due to flooding and landslides induced by heavy rain.
More than 30 thousand residents in the five districts have been affected by the disasters.
BNPB confirmed that as of January 23, at least 22 people, including a 5-month-old baby, have died in the disasters. Another 12 people have been injured and four people remain missing in Petungkriyono village, Pekalongan.
