Jakarta (ANTARA) - The body of an Indonesian migrant worker who was a victim of a shooting incident involving officers from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) will be repatriated following an autopsy.

The Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur confirmed this information based on details received from the Malaysian Police (PDRM).

“The embassy will carry out all (necessary) procedures for (proper) handling of the body as well as facilitating the repatriation to Indonesia,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on Monday.

The deceased Indonesian citizen, with the initials B, hailed from Riau Province.

He was part of a group of five Indonesian migrants who were shot at by APMM while allegedly attempting to exit Malaysia illegally on Friday (January 24) early morning.

Confirming the incident, the ministry's director of protection of Indonesian citizens and legal entities, Judha Nugraha, stated that the victims were likely shot after resisting arrest by APMM officers when their boat was intercepted in the waters of Tanjung Rhu, Selangor.

The four injured Indonesians have been treated at a hospital in Malaysia. They are currently in stable condition, according to the embassy.

The Indonesian Embassy has also secured consular access to visit them on Wednesday (Jan 29).

In response to this incident, the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur took immediate action to ensure the protection of the affected Indonesian citizens and sent a diplomatic note to Malaysia calling for a thorough investigation, including highlighting the possibility of excessive use of force.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur will continue to monitor developments in the case and provide consular and legal assistance to uphold the rights of Indonesian citizens within Malaysia's legal framework.
