Pekanbaru, Riau (ANTARA) - The National Press Day celebration event in Pekanbaru, Riau, on Saturday (February 8), was marked by a discussion about challenges and opportunities that journalism faces amid rapid digital disruption.

During the event, Chairman of the TVRI Supervisory Board Agus Sudibyo highlighted the public demand for quality and accountable information.

He pointed out that even though social media is becoming more prevalent, it cannot fully replace the role of traditional media in providing accurate and verified information.

"We should not be overly worried because there is still a strong demand for quality information and responsible journalism amidst this disruption. Social media cannot completely fulfill people’s need for in-depth, fact-based reporting," Sudibyo said.

He also highlighted the importance of adaptive content distribution models. According to him, it is unreasonable for media organizations not to utilize social media as a channel for distributing their content.

Meanwhile, Secretary of the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) Expert Council Nurjaman noted that currently, most of conventional news sources come from social media.

He mentioned that more agencies are now creating their own news content through their websites and social media platforms.

In the future, news agencies will likely produce their content and distribute it on their own portals and social media channels. He noted, creating news videos has become much easier with the help of artificial intelligence (AI).

Chairman of the Central PWI Expert Council Dhimam Abror stressed the importance of preserving journalism as a means to strengthen democracy.

He explained that the digital space has become a strategic platform for participating in democratic processes, especially in providing information that encourages critical thinking.

"The digital space enables people to think critically about current events, especially in politics. However, we must ensure that the quality of the information being shared," he said.
