Jakarta (ANTARA) - Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid has said that the government will soon issue a regulation on the handling of online gambling.

This was conveyed by the minister after a meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Monday.

"One of the steps that will be taken in the near future is issuing a regulation, likely in the form of a government regulation," she said.

Hafid noted that the meeting discussed the developments of online gambling handling, which is of concern to the government.

According to the minister, President Prabowo has emphasized the need for a firmer regulation for tackling online gambling.

So far, the government has blocked nearly one million online gambling sites. However, she said, this is not enough to comprehensively resolve the problem.

Therefore, collaboration with various parties, including the police and prosecutor's offices, will continue to be bolstered.

In addition, to protect children in the digital space, various social media platforms have been asked to immediately block any pornographic or online gambling content that they find.

Earlier, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs reported a continued decline in online gambling transactions based on quarterly evaluations in 2024, showing that the government's online gambling handling has been effective.

The evaluations were conducted based on the findings of the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK).

Director general of digital space supervision at the ministry, Alexander Sabar, informed that online gambling transactions reached Rp21 trillion (around US$1.29 billion) in the first quarter of 2024.

He further said that their value declined to Rp16 trillion (around US$984.6 million) in the second quarter and Rp4 trillion (around US$246.2 million) in the third quarter. (INE)
