She made the remarks as a follow-up to her meeting in late 2024 with the CEO of Nvidia, Jensen Huang, who shared his plans to build an AI center in eastern Indonesia.
"For Papua, we are most likely also collaborating with Nvidia. Indeed, there has been a delay, but it is still on track," Hafid said here on Wednesday.
The AI center, which will be named the AI Excellence Center, is planned to be built in the capital of Papua province, Jayapura, she added.
As an AI center, the facility will produce digital talents through activities such as training to hone their digital skills and abilities.
She expressed the hope that the AI Excellence Center will be realized in one to two months.
Earlier, at the Indonesia AI Day event on November 14, 2024, Nvidia, in partnership with telecommunications company Indosat, had conveyed its commitment to building an AI development center not only on Java Island, but also in Papua.
At the time, Minister Hafid, who met the Nvidia CEO, noted that Indonesia's partnerships with global AI industry players such as Nvidia can help accelerate the national digital transformation.
Huang's visit to Indonesia is also deemed proof of Indonesia's significant potential in AI industry development.
Hafid expressed optimism that Indonesia is seen as one of the possible global players in the AI industry.
