Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government is currently identifying the main needs of residents as part of flood-handling measures in Greater Jakarta.

They range from rescue and evacuation, fulfillment of basic needs, such as food and health services, to restoring infrastructure and rehabilitating the area.

"First, saving affected communities through evacuation and preparing refugee camps. Second, by fulfilling basic needs, especially food and other crucial staples during Ramadan," Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Pratikno, said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The third priority is restoring settlements and infrastructure, including roads, bridges, schools, places of worship, and other public facilities, he added.

He delivered the remarks during a virtual coordination meeting on emergency responses to hydrometeorological disasters.

The minister informed that the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) will coordinate with related parties, including the military, National Police, volunteers, humanitarian organizations, business institutions, and other resources, to conduct emergency response efforts in the field.

Meanwhile, his ministry will support the coordination of resource mobilization across ministries and institutions for uniform aid distribution.

"We must move quickly. Our priority is to save and evacuate the affected community, ensuring that the basic needs of the victims are met," Pratikno emphasized.

As a mitigation measure, the government will continue weather modification operations to reduce rainfall in the affected areas, he added.

The government has also urged people living on riverbanks, flood-prone areas, and landslide-prone areas to increase their readiness.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), floodwaters reaching a height of 1–4 meters flowed downstream from the Ciliwung river basin (DAS) in Puncak, Bogor, to several areas in Bekasi, Jakarta, and Depok.

The flash floods were triggered by heavy rainfall in the past few days.

Deputy for meteorology at the BMKG, Guswanto, on Tuesday described the heavy rainfall recorded in Bogor city on Sunday night as extreme, with rain intensity exceeding 110 mm per day.

The extreme rainfall is believed to have caused the Ciliwung DAS to overflow. The resulting flash floods inundated several sub-districts in Bogor city and Bogor district, with floodwaters moving downstream to Jakarta, Depok, Bekasi, and Tangerang.
