Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Environment has requested the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government to prepare for weather modification operations to reduce pollutants in the region as an anticipatory measure ahead of the dry season.

Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq stated that air pollution in Jakarta is influenced by several factors, including transportation, industrial activities, open waste burning, and aerosol pollution, or particles in the air originating from various sources.

"Together with the provincial government, we will make proper preparation on weather modification ahead of the dry season. We hope to reduce the pollution," he stated when met after the vehicles' emission tests in North Jakarta, Tuesday.

This measure is being implemented in response to rising air pollution levels in the Jakarta area and its surroundings during the dry season. The minister requested that the Jakarta provincial government and its environmental agency prepare for this initiative.

"Air pollution in the dry season will not disappear unless we reduce it with rain, so the steps to be taken by the Environmental Agency require serious funding to produce rain during the dry season. This is not to prevent fires but to improve air quality," Nurofiq explained.

The minister stated that the weather modification operation will proceed alongside the government's efforts to handle other sources of air pollution in Jakarta, including reducing air pollution levels from the transportation sector by conducting emission tests on goods transport vehicles and articulated vehicles at various warehouses.

Emission tests were conducted, as the transportation sector accounts for 33 to 35 percent of air pollution in Jakarta and its surroundings, with half of it coming from exhaust fumes from goods transport vehicles and articulated vehicles such as trucks.

In addition, he requested that his ranks build more air quality monitoring stations in industrial areas to reduce sources of air pollution in Jakarta and its surroundings.
