Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Environment will dispatch teams to support the improvement of market cleanliness in the efforts to reduce waste.

"We will support the handling of market cleanliness, which is a program of the trade minister," Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq told the press after conducting monitoring at West Tomang Market along with Trade Minister Budi Santoso here on Friday.

He underscored the need to improve waste handling, especially waste management, in traditional markets. This refers to managers' obligation to manage waste in their areas under Law Number 18 of 2008.

This is also regulated in Government Regulation Number 81 of 2012 concerning the Management of Household Waste and Waste Similar to Household Waste.

On Friday's monitoring, he called on market managers and regional governments to regularly remind market vendors to continually manage waste. Moreover, the waste produced at the West Tomang Market reaches 46 tons per month.

He also highlighted the importance of managing leachate in markets, which can arise when piles of mixed organic and inorganic waste are exposed to water and can leak into the surrounding environment.

Under President Prabowo Subianto's leadership, the Indonesian government is prioritizing waste management to achieve full coverage by 2029. The target has been included in the government's new National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN).

According to the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN) of the Ministry of Environment, the volume of waste generated in 301 districts and cities reached 32.6 million tons in 2024.
