Cimahi, W Java (ANTARA) - Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq called on regional governments, particularly the environment offices, to conduct monitoring of waste management in markets.

At a market cleanup event here on Saturday, he noted that National Waste Awareness Day, commemorated every February 21, must be utilized to increase the community's awareness of the importance of waste management.

He specifically highlighted that markets are one of the sources of waste. Therefore, a national movement to clean up waste in markets as part of the 2025 National Waste Awareness Action is deemed necessary.

Nurofiq expressed his readiness to collaborate with the Ministry of Trade to implement market cleanup efforts aimed at reducing landfill burdens by decreasing waste disposal volumes.

On the same occasion, Deputy Minister of Trade Dyah Roro Esti Widya Putri noted that waste is one of the issues faced by markets in various regions of Indonesia. Specifically, markets are the second-largest source after households in terms of waste generation.

To this end, she called for implementing the Nusantara Waste Cleanup National Movement in support of National Waste Awareness Day, which is expected to be held annually to improve awareness.

According to the National Waste Management Information System of the Ministry of Environment, 13.38 percent of the total 29.4 million tons of waste generated by 278 districts and cities throughout 2024 came from markets.

"In markets, the issue of waste has become very problematic. Therefore, a solution is needed," she highlighted.

Earlier, Minister Nurofiq also urged all regional governments to promptly complete the waste management roadmap, following the example set by the Jakarta Provincial Government.
