Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Deputy Speaker of Indonesia's People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), Lestari Moerdijat, has emphasized the need to improve the fulfillment of the basic rights of people with disabilities as part of the government's obligation to protect its citizens.

In a statement received on Friday, she noted that people living with disabilities still face difficulties in meeting their basic needs, such as education, healthcare, and employment. Therefore, joint efforts are needed to ensure their rights.

According to Moerdijat, efforts to ensure the basic rights of people with disabilities must be backed by concrete support from relevant parties.

She noted that there are 4.3 million people with disabilities in Indonesia, most of whom are adults and elderly, based on 2023 Socioeconomic Registration (Regsosek) data, a national database compiled by the Indonesian government.

Meanwhile, according to the 2024 National Socioeconomic Survey (Susenas), another government survey, 17.2 percent of people with disabilities aged 15 and above have never attended school, and only 4.24 percent have managed to pursue higher education.

"People with disabilities and their families continue to face limited access to basic services, such as education, healthcare, and employment," Moerdijat highlighted.

Regarding healthcare, she said, people with disabilities tend to have lower access to both government and private health insurance.

"For that reason, a strong commitment and collaboration between stakeholders at the central and regional levels are needed," she added.

Moerdijat called for greater efforts to promote awareness of the basic rights of people with disabilities so that all parties understand their importance.

She expressed hope that ensuring these rights would help increase their active participation in national development as citizens.
