Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto had requested a meeting with United States President Donald Trump long before the announcement of the US import tariff policy.

"I have requested for a time (to meet with President Trump)," Prabowo said after attending the Antalya Diplomacy Forum (ADF) in Turkey on Friday evening.

According to Foreign Minister Sugiono, an official letter requesting the meeting was sent at the beginning of Trump's second term in January 2025.

He added that the request was submitted to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.

Currently, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is still awaiting confirmation on the meeting.

"We submitted a request for a meeting with President Trump long before the tariff policy was implemented," Sugiono said.

Meanwhile, regarding the US reciprocal tariff policy of 32 percent against Indonesia, announced on April 2, 2025, and scheduled to take effect on April 9, Sugiono said that the government has sent a team to the US to start negotiations.

Trump has since announced a 90-day tariff pause for 75 trading partners, including Indonesia.
