Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Defense of Indonesia has expressed interest in collaborating with the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) to gain valuable knowledge about space defense and enhance Indonesia's capacity to counter cyber threats.

Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin raised this cooperation opportunity while hosting Chief of Staff of the Joint Staff of the JSDF, General Yoshida Yoshihide, at his ministry's headquarters in Central Jakarta on Friday.

Brigadier General Frega Ferdinand Wenas Inkiriwang, head of the Defense Ministry's Information Center, explained that Indonesia aims to learn from the technologies Japan employs in its space and cyber defense strategies.

Focusing on space defense, he emphasized that this cooperation would be especially valuable for Indonesia, as Japan is one of the few countries to have formally established a military unit dedicated to space security.

"I believe that Japan formed a unit called the Space Operations Squadron back in 2020," he remarked.

He expressed hope that the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) will gain expertise from Japan in bolstering Indonesia's ability to protect itself from threats associated with aerospace and cyberspace.

The TNI officer also anticipated that military cooperation in this area would lead to further strengthening the long-standing and harmonious bilateral relations between Indonesia and Japan.

Earlier today, JSDF’s Yoshihide also visited the TNI Headquarters in East Jakarta, where he met with TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto.

Following the meeting, Head of the Information Center of the TNI Headquarters, Brig. Gen. Kristomei Sianturi, told the media that the TNI is interested in developing cyber defense cooperation with its Japanese counterpart.

Additionally, he noted that the meeting resulted in a commitment from the JSDF to take part in the 2025 Super Garuda Shield multinational military exercise, which will be held in Indonesia.
