Jakarta (ANTARA) - Manpower Minister Yassierli announced his plan to engage in discussions with representatives from workers' unions and the Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo) to advance the formation of the National Labor Welfare Council.

“What strategic steps will we take? First, we will listen to the aspirations of labor union leaders this week. Opinions from Apindo will also be taken into account,” he stated in Jakarta on Monday.

The minister said he would bring up the council establishment plan with the National Tripartite Cooperation Agency and the National Wage Council.

"In detail, our plan for the next two weeks is to gather aspirations, and afterwards, we will report our findings to Mr. President Prabowo Subianto, who is expected to issue follow-up instructions. Hence, there is a long way to go," he elaborated.

President Prabowo introduced the government's plan to form the National Labor Welfare Council during his address to thousands of unionized laborers at a May Day mass gathering at the National Monument, Jakarta, on May 1.

"As a gift for all of you, I will promptly form a National Labor Welfare Council," he told the workers, noting that the council will include labor representatives from across Indonesia.

Prabowo explained that the council is expected to provide him with recommendations for improving labor-related regulations deemed unfavorable by workers.

He stated that the planned council would also assist in advancing discussions on phasing out outsourcing practices without harming the investment climate.

"Yes, we want to eliminate outsourcing, but we must also be realistic, as protecting the interests of investors is equally important. If they do not invest, there will be no factories, which, in turn, will leave workers jobless," he affirmed.

Moreover, the head of state vowed to bring together labor leaders and employers to the Bogor Palace to seek common ground on their interests.
