Timika (ANTARA) - Residents of Mimika District in Central Papua warmly welcomed the Vatican Ambassador to Indonesia, Monsignor (Mgr) Piero Pioppo, upon his arrival on Tuesday.

The Vatican ambassador to Indonesia was greeted at Mozes Kilangin Timika Airport in Mimika District by a dance performed by the Kamoro Tribe.

Mimika District Head, Johannes Rettob, said the arrival of the ambassador and his entourage was a great honor for all Catholics in Papua.

"The arrival of the Vatican ambassador to Indonesia is also important to strengthen the relationship between the Catholic Church and the local government and the people of Mimika," Rettob stated.

The ambassador also expressed his gratitude for the enthusiastic reception, especially from the Catholics who came to welcome him at the airport.

"Thank you for the very lively welcome. Thank you, Timika," he stated.

Mgr. Piero Pioppo is scheduled to lead the ordination of Bishop Bernardus Bofitwos Baru of Timika on Wednesday (May 14).

Rettob, who also heads the Timika Bishop Ordination Trust, stated that the Timika Diocese Bishop Ordination Mass will be attended by around 10 thousand Catholics from the provinces of Central Papua and Papua.

"The presence of Catholics from various regions is proof of the brotherhood of the Mimika people," he noted.

He affirmed that the local government ensures security and comfort throughout the Timika Bishop Ordination event.

"We hope that the entire series of activities will run solemnly," he remarked.
