Jakarta (ANTARA) -

The 19th Conference of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) has advocated for greater opportunities for women to participate in public decision-making processes, according to the House of Representatives (DPR).

"At this Muslim women's forum, we are aligning our perspectives on how to provide broader opportunities for women to be involved in public decision-making," said Irine Yusiana Roba Putri, deputy chair of the DPR's Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP), on Tuesday.

The 19th PUIC Conference, held at the parliament building in Senayan, Jakarta, from May 12 to 15, 2025, focuses on "Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience."

At least 450 parliamentary delegates from 38 OIC member countries, including 10 observer nations, are attending the conference, which coincides with the silver jubilee of the PUIC's founding in 1999.

Putri stated that the issue of women's participation was raised at one of the conference forums, which discussed the challenges faced by women legislators globally.

"Many countries are making good progress, but others are still stagnant in their efforts to empower women," she added.

Citing data from the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), she noted that the current global women's empowerment movement appears to be losing momentum.

She emphasized that this stagnant progress warrants attention, as this year marks the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action.

She also highlighted the fifth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), which aims to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women and girls by 2030.

Separately, BKSAP chair Mardani Ali Sera emphasized that the membership structure of BKSAP exemplifies youth and female involvement in legislative affairs.

He also noted that the Indonesian parliament is led by a woman, House Speaker Puan Maharani.
