Manokwari, W Papua (ANTARA) - Indonesia's National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) announced on Monday that it prioritizes 821 families in six districts of West Papua in its Foster Parents for Stunting Prevention Program this year.

Households at higher risk of having stunted children hail from the districts of Manokwari, Manokwari Selatan, Pegunungan Arfak, Teluk Bintuni, Teluk Wondama, and Kaimana, according to the agency.

In her remarks here on Monday, Head of the BKKBN-Manokwari Office Philmona Maria Yarollo stated that Manokwari would become the program's top priority as 338 of the 821 targeted families are from the district.

Yarollo highlighted that the Foster Parents for Stunting Prevention Program, known as "Genting," has been running since early this year as one of BKKBN's five priority programs, but its intervention success rate "remains so low."

Yarolla reported that the Genting intervention success rate was recorded at only 13.40 percent.

Hence, to accelerate the reduction of the stunting rate in West Papua, she called on community members to support the Genting program, which is rooted in the spirit of "gotong royong," or mutual cooperation.

As reported earlier, the Population and Family Development Ministry officially launched the Genting Program on December 5, 2024, as part of the government's efforts to reduce the risk of stunting among families.

To this end, the government provides nutritional support, implements clean water programs, and works to prevent early marriages.

As of April 28, 2025, the ministry reported that the total number of foster children supported by the Genting Program had reached 141,382, with assistance from 20,396 foster parents.
