Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Tourism Ministry is cooperating with the Jakarta provincial government to develop Jakarta city’s tourism sector as part of efforts to turn it into a global city.

“There are many programs, promotions, events, and city planning efforts that we can collaborate on,” Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana said in an official statement released here on Friday.

The collaboration was marked by the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the minister and Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung in Jakarta, on Thursday.

Wardhana said that Jakarta has a strategic role in strengthening the tourism sector. It has the second-largest contribution to the national gross regional domestic product (GRDP), and serves as one of the main gateways for foreign tourists to Indonesia.

In addition, Jakarta has hosted several international events that have had a direct economic impact.

“These further strengthened its strategic role in the national tourism ecosystem. Therefore, this collaboration is carried out to bolster Jakarta’s position and grand vision as a global city,” the minister added.

The cooperation will include developing tourism destinations, organizing events, increasing the capacity of tourism human resources, and building international tourism recognition for Jakarta.

It will also include developing tourism marketing, increasing cooperation in the tourism industry and investment, and supporting the exchange and utilization of data and information in line with laws and regulations.

The cooperation is expected to tap the cultural and historical potential of Jakarta, improve its infrastructure, and make the quality of tourist services more optimal to attract more domestic and foreign travelers.

Meanwhile, Governor Anung stated that there are many programs that the two parties can carry out together, including waste management at tourist destinations.

This year, the Indonesian government is targeting to draw up to 16 million international tourists and 1.08 billion domestic tourists.
