Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Speaker of the Jakarta Regional House of Representatives (DPRD), Khoirudin, has reminded the Jakarta Provincial Government that the city’s development must be guided by cultural values and local wisdom.

"Urban development should not be driven solely by modernization; it must also be grounded in cultural values and local wisdom," Khoirudin said during the DPRD Plenary Session held in celebration of Jakarta’s 498th anniversary on Sunday.

This statement aligns with this year’s Jakarta Anniversary theme: “Jakarta as a Global and Cultured City.”

Khoirudin emphasized that the commemoration should not be a mere annual ceremony, but rather a shared moment of reflection on the city’s long journey as a center of governance, economy, culture, and civilization.

He also reminded that Jakarta, as a metropolitan city preparing for the national capital’s relocation (to Ibu Kota Nusantara), must be able to reposition itself as a global city on par with other major urban centers around the world, without losing its cultural identity.

For this reason, values such as mutual cooperation (gotong royong), tolerance, and diversity —long-standing pillars of Jakarta’s strength— must continue to be preserved and reinforced.

The Jakarta DPRD reaffirmed its commitment to working in synergy with the provincial government to achieve development that is inclusive, sustainable, and just.

Khoirudin also called on all elements of society to maintain unity and actively contribute to shaping Jakarta into a more livable, competitive, and culturally vibrant city, one that sets a new standard for global urbanism.

He noted that the Jakarta government has implemented and continues to pursue a range of programs and policies, including infrastructure development, improved public services, transportation management, flood control efforts, and the expansion of green public spaces. These, he said, remain key priorities that must be further strengthened.

The DPRD underscored that development should not only produce physical progress but also enhance the social and economic welfare of all residents.

The council also pledged to continue carrying out its legislative and oversight functions effectively to ensure that government policies and development programs are implemented in a transparent, accountable, and impactful manner.
