Jambi (ANTARA) - The Jambi police claimed, Monday, that at least 800 thousand Indonesians could be prevented from falling into drug abuse after officers thwarted two drug couriers' attempt to transport 200 kilograms of dried marijuana to Java.

The suspects, identified only as I and RR, were arrested after a minibus they used to deliver the drug package from Riau to Java Island was intercepted while passing through Jambi City on Saturday, July 12, at 8:00 p.m. local time.

According to Jambi City Police Chief Senior Commissioner Boy Sutan Binanga Siregar, his officers tracked the suspects' movements based on valuable intelligence regarding their alleged drug trafficking operation.

During the raid, police officers confiscated six black plastic bags containing 200 packs of dried marijuana, weighing a total of 200 kilograms, which the suspects had hidden in the minibus bearing license plate BB 1569 FC, he stated.

The police also discovered a GPS device inside one of the seized bags, according to Siregar, who suspected that the drug lord intentionally placed it there to track whether the package was successfully delivered.

He explained that one gram of dried cannabis could be consumed by four people. Therefore, the seizure of 200 kilograms of dried marijuana could potentially prevent at least 800 thousand people from falling into drug abuse and addiction.

I and RR have been charged under Articles 114 (2), 111 (2), and 132 (1) of Indonesia's Narcotics Law No. 35 of 2009, which carries penalties of death or life imprisonment, Siregar remarked.

Indonesia remains a key target for international drug syndicates due to its large population and growing number of drug users.

According to the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), the number of drug addicts in Indonesia has reached 3.3 million, while the economic impact of drug smuggling has been recorded at Rp500 trillion.
