In a statement here on Sunday, KORMI Chairperson Adil Hakim noted that the participation of Indonesians in sports is still relatively low.
To this end, he said, through FORNAS held from July 26 to August 1, KORMI seeks to strengthen sportsmanship, the spirit of togetherness, and the preservation of the sport culture.
The Sport Development Index of Indonesia in 2024 showed that 114 million, or 55.5 percent, of Indonesian citizens aged 10 to 60 years are categorized as having very low physical fitness.
Meanwhile, 24.7 percent, or around 50.7 million others, are categorized as having bad physical fitness.
Hakim noted that there were only 6.3 percent, or around 12.9 million, Indonesians whose physical fitness is in the good and higher category.
According to him, improving the health and fitness of the community is vital in the development of human resources that can strengthen Indonesia's position as an active actor in global and regional development cooperation.
"The nation's competitiveness is not only measured from the cognitive capabilities of the people but also the balance of the physical, mental, and social aspects," he remarked.
The VIII FORNAS is held to promote and encourage healthy lifestyles and fitness as well as introduce various types of community sports to support the Active Indonesia movement.
The event, featuring contingents from 38 provinces, is participated in by more than 18,000 people with an economic turnover of above Rp800 billion (around US$48.9 million) and an estimated number of temporary jobs created reaching 9,500 jobs.
The first FORNAS was held in Jakarta in 2011, drawing around 5,000 participants. In the previous edition in 2023, FORNAS was held in West Java, with around 23,000 people participating in the event.
