Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) stated that recent floods and strong winds in the provinces of Bengkulu, South Sumatra, and Central Java—occurring during the peak of the dry season—are signs of weather anomalies.

“Wet hydrometeorological disasters are occurring amid the dry season. We urge all regional governments and communities to stay vigilant and enhance preparedness,” Head of BNPB’s Data, Information, and Communication Center Abdul Muhari remarked here on Friday.

He explained that these unusual weather events have led to inundated settlements, damaged infrastructure, and dozens of affected homes across the three provinces.

BNPB recorded that flooding in Seluma District, Bengkulu, occurred after very heavy rainfall hit the area from late Thursday night (July 31).

The disaster affected 206 housing units, including several public facilities such as a school, and caused the collapse of a suspension bridge in several sub-districts.

On the same day, heavy rain also caused river water to overflow in East Baturaja and West Baturaja sub-districts of Ogan Komering Ulu District, South Sumatra.

The local quick response team assisted 82 families, or 322 residents, affected by the floods while simultaneously handling a local land fire.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, July 30, extreme weather in the form of strong winds struck Rembang District, Central Java. According to BNPB data, the strong winds damaged 41 homes.

Residents, along with a joint task force, are currently clearing debris and repairing homes.

Muhari emphasized that this series of events demonstrates the importance of mitigation efforts, such as cleaning drainage systems and removing fragile trees.

He also called for public awareness campaigns to discourage land clearing by burning, in order to reduce wildfire risks during the July–August dry season peak.
