Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai stated that the government "reserves the right" to ban the Straw Hat Pirates flag from the Japanese series One Piece from being flown during Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day anniversary.
In his written remarks on Sunday, the minister explained that prohibiting the flag is an important step to protect national symbols and demonstrate respect for the country.
His statement came in response to a recent online trend where Indonesian netizens have been sharing photos and videos of the fictional flag flying on homes, vehicles, and in public spaces as the anniversary approaches.
In the One Piece series, the Straw Hat Pirates' flag represents defiance against an oppressive world government and a pursuit of freedom and justice.
Riding a wave of social media trends, Indonesian netizens have adopted this symbolism to express their dissatisfaction with perceived corruption and injustice in the country.
Pigai warned that flying the One Piece flag alongside the Indonesian Red-and-White flag could be a legal violation and potentially even sedition, which the government is obligated to address.
He added that such action is consistent with international law, which protects a state’s right to act against potential threats to national integrity and stability.
The minister argued that international organizations, including the United Nations, would likely not object to Indonesia’s decision, as it aligns with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which Indonesia ratified through Law No. 12 of 2005.
He added that this move would demonstrate the synergy between national and international law in preserving stability.
Pigai also dismissed concerns that the ban is intended to restrict freedom of expression.
He remarked, “I hope that the people understand that this prohibition is for the sake of national unity and integrity during a historical moment, such as the Independence Day commemoration.”
