"Amid global uncertainty, agriculture stands out as the backbone of the national economy," Minister Amran noted in a statement from Jakarta on Thursday.
According to Statistics Indonesia (BPS) data, the national economy grew by 5.12 percent year-on-year and 4.04 percent quarter-to-quarter.
The sector contributed 13.83 percent to the gross domestic product (GDP), making it the second-largest contributor after manufacturing.
In terms of production, the Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries Business Field recorded the highest quarterly growth at 13.53 percent in the second quarter of 2025, up from 9.74 percent in the previous quarter.
The sector's added value increased significantly from Rp361.5 trillion in the first quarter to Rp410.4 trillion in the second quarter of 2025.
BPS also reported that total rice production from January to June 2025 reached 19.16 million tons, a 13.53 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
In addition, rice production in the third quarter is projected to reach 9.08 million tons, up 11.17 percent year-on-year.
"Under the leadership of President Prabowo, the government is strongly committed to food self-sufficiency, supporting farmers, and implementing impactful policies on the ground. These form the foundation of a sovereign and sustainable national agriculture development," Amran stated.
Earlier, President Prabowo Subianto, during a plenary cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday (August 6), emphasized that the current state of national food production is strong and secure.
"Our direction in the food sector has shown success. Current government reserves are the largest in history. The farmers' terms of trade have also improved," President Prabowo stated.
He also expressed appreciation to all parties working to maintain national food stability.
The president stressed that food production is a strategic issue for national sovereignty, adding that no nation can be truly independent without the ability to produce its own food.
