Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati announced on Saturday that funding for Sekolah Rakyat — the government's free-tuition schools — will rise significantly in 2026.

This year, the schools have a budget of Rp7 trillion (US$430.7 million). The 2026 allocation will be revealed by President Prabowo Subianto when he presents the Draft State Budget (RAPBN) to the House of Representatives (DPR) on August 15.

"The President will announce the 2026 Draft State Budget on August 15, which will be discussed with the DPR, including the Sekolah Rakyat budget. The budget has increased significantly," Indrawati said.

She noted that this year's Rp7 trillion is distributed not only through the Ministry of Social Affairs but also other ministries and institutions, including the Ministry of Public Works.

The 2026 budget hike comes as the number of Sekolah Rakyat is set to grow by more than 100. The Ministry of Social Affairs said 100 schools will open on August 15–16, with another 59 scheduled for September, bringing the 2025 total to 159 schools serving more than 15,000 students.

"Next year, the number will increase significantly because operational costs will be allocated for one year for 200 schools, so we are providing a substantial budget," she said.

In addition to operating and teaching expenses, the budget will also cover construction costs in areas lacking adequate facilities.

The Sekolah Rakyat program, initiated by President Prabowo, aims to help children from poor and vulnerable families, breaking the cycle of intergenerational poverty.
