Jakarta (ANTARA) - Member of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) Syahrul Aidi reminded that the food security program requires supporting infrastructure, including advances in technology, information, and main weapons systems.

As Indonesia approaches its 80th anniversary of independence, he emphasized that true independence is not only freedom from colonial rule, but also independence in various strategic areas, including food, technology, economics, and human resources.

In a written statement issued here on Saturday, Aidi cited China as an example, saying the country has dared to withstand international trade pressures because it has achieved independence in many vital sectors.

For this reason, he welcomed President Prabowo Subianto's move to expand the concept of defense from merely military defense to include food defense.

"When we are able to produce what we consume, we will be independent and free. When we are able to produce what others consume, we will progress. But, if we are unable to produce what we consume ourselves, we will be colonized," said Aidi.

He stated that food is a basic need that determines national sovereignty. With its vast agricultural potential, Indonesia is considered capable of achieving self-sufficiency and even becoming a food exporter, thereby attaining true independence in this strategic sector.

Therefore, members of the House commission overseeing defense, foreign affairs, communications and informatics, and intelligence also support the Ministry of Defense’s plan to form a special food battalion.

However, Aidi cautioned that the focus on food security should not be misinterpreted to the point of neglecting the development of vital infrastructure for the community.

He stressed that road and bridge construction must continue, both those directly related to food security and those serving the public’s transportation needs.

"Don't be so rigid in interpreting food security policies that it sacrifices other basic needs," he said.

He further noted that several ministries appeared less responsive to public suggestions about the need for basic infrastructure that is not directly related to food security.

In fact, he said, this infrastructure remains a backbone of economic activity and the people’s welfare.

Therefore, Aidi emphasized that full support for President Prabowo’s food defense policy, while continuing to build comprehensive national independence, must also include other strategic sectors and accommodate the vital needs of communities across various regions.
