"I have ordered that last night's incident be investigated thoroughly and transparently. The involved officers must be held accountable," he stressed in a video uploaded on the YouTube page of the Presidential Secretariat on Friday.
The President emphasized that if the police officers were found to have acted outside of the existing regulations, the government would take the most severe action in accordance with the law.
In the video, he also extended condolences to Kurniawan's family and stated that the government would guarantee their well-being.
Kurniawan was struck by a tactical vehicle of the Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) during a protest in Jakarta on Thursday. Videos went viral showing the police vehicle appearing to continue driving after hitting Kurniawan, provoking people to chase it.
The incident triggered condemnation from the public. A crowd gathered outside the Brimob headquarters in Central Jakarta on Friday morning, throwing objects in protest over Kurniawan's death.
National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo apologized personally to Kurniawan’s family and the public on Friday and ensured that he would address the issues that arose following the protest.
Meanwhile, Head of the National Police Profession and Security Division, Inspector General Abdul Karim, on Friday morning, stated that seven police personnel who were inside the tactical vehicle during the incident were being probed.
