Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable aviation by promoting the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), Ambassador to Canada and Permanent Representative to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Muhsin Syihab has said.

Syihab made the statement while presenting his credentials to ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar in Montreal, Canada, on Wednesday.

With ICAO’s support, Indonesia can become a major hub and supplier of SAF in the Asia-Pacific and beyond, he said in a written statement on Thursday.

“We’re ready to work with the ICAO Council, Secretariat, and member states to advance sustainable aviation,” he added.

He noted that state energy firm Pertamina shipped its first batch of SAF made from used cooking oil in August and plans to deliver up to 1.7 million liters to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Banten.

Salazar expressed support for Indonesia’s SAF initiative, noting that the anticipated growth in global air travel over the next 20 years will make it increasingly difficult to meet aviation’s carbon reduction targets.

He emphasized that ICAO aims to reach net-zero carbon emissions in aviation by 2050, and viewed Indonesia’s efforts to develop SAF as an important contribution to that goal.

He added that by expanding SAF production, Indonesia could play a crucial role in supporting the aviation sector’s decarbonization efforts.

Salazar also described Indonesia as a valuable partner in advancing ICAO’s broader sustainability objectives.

During their meeting, Syihab and Salazar also discussed aviation technology, workforce development, and preparations for the 42nd ICAO Assembly later this month.

In a separate meeting, ICAO Council President Salvatore Schiachtano praised Indonesia’s independent development of SAF, saying it contributes meaningfully to global environmental protection under the international aviation framework.
