Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Lestari Moerdijat reminded the government of the importance of improving public service providers' knowledge regarding the rights of people with disabilities.

According to her, despite the presence of regulations on public services for people with disabilities, some people with disabilities still receive improper treatment due to a lack of understanding among public service providers.

"People with disabilities often get improper treatment because the officers do not understand their obligations towards people with disabilities," she told the press in Jakarta on Thursday.

She underlined that the implementation of Law Number 8 of 2016 on People with Disabilities must be applied in daily public services.

Furthermore, she assessed that audits on the accessibility of public facilities must be accompanied by an improvement of public services provided by officers.

"All parties must consistently implement policies related to the fulfillment of the rights of people with disabilities for the national development process that can realize a just and prosperous society more equitably in the country," she remarked.

Earlier, Indonesian Ombudsman member Johanes Widijantoro emphasized that people with disabilities have the same rights in accessing public services.

"Even though the diversity of disabilities poses its own challenges in public services, that is actually when the responsive attitude of service providers is tested," he said.

He further underscored the increasing trends in complaints related to disabilities that the Indonesian Ombudsman received from 2020 to 2024, reflecting the rising awareness of public service rights and the presence of hindrances in services for people with disabilities.

In this regard, Widijantoro emphasized the Ombudsman's commitment to realizing inclusive public services that cover two main things: human resources with an inclusive perspective and accessible facilities.
