Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo confirmed that he had reached out to the Jakarta Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) to inquire about lawmakers’ monthly housing allowances, which reportedly reach nearly Rp80 million (around US$4,900).

The financial facility has drawn public criticism following nationwide backlash against similar allowances for national legislators at the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), which have since been withheld.

“I have communicated with the Jakarta DPRD, and they will convene a meeting to discuss the matter today. It should be noted that the authority in this context lies with the council,” Pramono told the press in Central Jakarta on Monday.

Housing allowances for Jakarta’s local legislators are regulated under Government Regulation (PP) No. 18 of 2017 on the Financial and Administrative Rights of DPRD Leaders and Members and Jakarta Governor’s Regulation No. 17 of 2022.

The PP stipulates that if local lawmakers do not receive official residences from their local government, they are entitled to monthly housing allowances, determined on the principles of propriety, fairness, and rationality.

In Jakarta, Governor’s Decree No. 415 of 2022 grants Rp78.8 million (approx. US$4,800) in monthly housing allowance for DPRD leaders and Rp70.4 million (US$4,300) for ordinary lawmakers.

On Thursday (September 2), the Alliance of Students for Democracy (AMPSI) staged a protest in front of the Jakarta DPRD Building, voicing three key demands: Disclosing and evaluating the salaries and allowances of Jakarta DPRD members, which are believed to exceed those of national legislators; Reducing or abolishing allowances considered excessive and insensitive to the public; Auditing the financial reports of companies owned by the Jakarta government, notably Darma Jaya, Pasar Jaya, Food Station, PAM Jaya, and Jakpro.

In response, Jakarta DPRD Deputy Speaker Ima Mahdiah affirmed that the council would enhance transparency regarding lawmakers’ salaries and allowances.

Similarly, Deputy Speaker Basri Baco said the DPRD would evaluate salaries and allowances, noting that all party factions had no objections to readjusting the financial facilities.
