"The current situation is considered force majeure, but we and all airport stakeholders are still working to maintain service standards," said Gede Eka Sandi Asmadi, Head of the Communications and Legal Division of Ngurah Rai Airport in Denpasar on Wednesday.
The heavy rain that inundated Bali, especially Denpasar, for more than 24 hours since Tuesday (Sept 9) morning has resulted in flooding across almost all of Denpasar and surrounding districts.
Despite the force majeure event, fortunately, all operations at the airport located in southern Bali are currently running normally.
However, airport management, along with relevant parties, is still taking mitigation measures.
"These include increasing passenger seating, adjusting terminal service personnel, and encouraging prospective passengers to arrive at the airport early," Asmadi said.
He stated that airlines have also issued similar advice, urging prospective passengers to calculate the time needed to reach the airport, given that several vital points leading to the airport have also been paralyzed by flooding, requiring passengers to seek alternative routes.
"We have also coordinated with all airlines to anticipate any passengers experiencing delays and requiring special handling, such as rescheduling or other things," he said.
In addition to supporting prospective passengers departing from Bali, Ngurah Rai Airport is also coordinating with the airport's ground transportation operators to prepare fleet requirements for newly arrived passengers.
"To meet the transportation needs of passengers arriving in Bali, we have been intensively coordinating with the airport's ground transportation operators to manage vehicle availability amidst the congestion that has occurred on many roads leading to and from the airport," he said.
