Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia and Poland have strengthened international law enforcement cooperation by signing a Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) agreement, underscoring their shared commitment to tackling cross-border crime.

The agreement was signed at the Polish Ministry of Justice in Warsaw on Friday by Indonesia’s Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas and Poland’s Minister of Justice Waldemar Zurek.

“This agreement is a concrete step by the Indonesian government to combat cross-border crimes and marks a significant milestone for Indonesia as a member of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF),” Agtas said in a ministry statement.

He noted that the MLA covers not only general criminal offenses but also taxation and customs violations. Poland becomes the second European country—after Switzerland—to establish such an agreement with Indonesia.

Agtas highlighted the timing of the signing, which coincided with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Poland, dating back to September 19, 1955. He expressed optimism that the pact would open the door for similar MLA partnerships with other EU members and international partners.

Poland’s Justice Minister Waldemar Zurek welcomed the agreement as a new chapter in bilateral legal cooperation and voiced interest in future discussions on prisoner transfers and extradition.

Alongside the MLA, both ministers signed a joint statement to share expertise and coordinate efforts between their respective ministries.

The Indonesian delegation included Law Ministry Secretary-General Nico Afinta; special staff for foreign affairs Yadi Hendriana; special staff for security, order, and intelligence Adam Muhammad; and representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, accompanied by Acting Chargé d’Affaires Agus Heryana in Poland.
