BPOM's director for narcotics, psychotropics, precursors, and addictive substance safety and quality monitoring, Nova Emelda, made the statement on World Patient Safety Day 2026 here on Thursday.
IPMG is a non-profit organization comprising 26 Indonesia-based pharmaceutical multinational companies operating on a foundation of research and technological pursuits.
Emelda stated that collaboration between BPOM and manufacturers is necessary, given data from WHO shows that one in 10 medications in low- and middle-income countries have substandard quality.
Her administration tests samples from all across Indonesia and establishes communication with businesses to ensure compliance if they identify the business's product as substandard.
Moreover, BPOM takes firm action against parties who manufacture fake medications.
On the same occasion, IPMG Board Member Manishkumar Munot highlighted the diverted product as one of the problems in the pharmaceutical sector in Indonesia.
A diverted product is recognized and accepted in one market; however, it is brought to another market illegally because the latter does not accept the product, he explained.
Munot stressed the importance of addressing these issues, as they are tied to patient safety.
Hence, his organization, BPOM, and authorities consistently collaborate by sharing information so the government can take firm action to curb these practices. This initiative has been carried out for 1.5 years, he said.
He also reminded buyers to get their products from trusted sellers and not just buy them from some store that offers discounts.
Moreover, people need to ascertain a product's quality and originality, such as by comparing its appearance with a valid description provided by the internet.
