About Pancasila Sanctity Day
Every year on October 1, Indonesia observes Pancasila Sanctity Day to honor the nation's commitment to its founding ideology, Pancasila.
The 2025 commemoration carries the theme “Pancasila: The Unifying Force Toward a Great Indonesia,” emphasizing national unity and resilience.
The day marks the nation’s resistance against the 1965 attempted coup by the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI), known as the 30 September Movement (G30S/PKI).
The uprising aimed to overthrow President Sukarno’s government and replace Pancasila with a communist ideology. The coup failed due to the collective vigilance and resistance of the Indonesian people.
Pancasila Sanctity Day was officially established by presidential decree to serve as a reminder of the ideology’s role in unifying the country.
October 1 symbolizes the triumph of Pancasila over threats to national integrity and reaffirms its place as the sole guiding principle of the Indonesian state.
The G30S/PKI tragedy claimed the lives of six army generals and one junior officer, including Gen. Ahmad Yani and Capt. Pierre Tendean, who were killed and buried in a mass grave at Lubang Buaya.
Other victims included AIP II K.S. Tubun, Lt. Col. Sugiyono, and Ade Irma Suryani Nasution, the young daughter of Gen. A.H. Nasution—himself the only surviving target of the failed coup.
