Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Forestry will limit visitors at the Komodo National Park, East Nusa Tenggara, to 1,000 tourists per day as part of efforts to protect the national park from environmental degradation.

Director General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation at the ministry, Satyawan Pudyatmoko, said that the number of visits to Komodo National Park has continued to increase, reaching more than 300 thousand visits in 2024.

"The impact includes the potential threat of degradation to terrestrial and marine ecosystems and discomfort for tourists during activities," he said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

To this end, the ministry will regulate the visits by applying a quota in accordance with the results of the study on the carrying capacity of the national park, which was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.

For the initial phase, Pudyatmoko said, the 1,000 quota per day will be divided into three sessions, with each session allocated for 300 to 330 people.

According to him, the dissemination of information and simulation for the limit enforcement will be carried out from October to December 2025.

The quota system trials will start in January 2026, before the daily visitor limit is officially implemented in April 2026.

Earlier in August, Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni stated that he had instructed his staff to limit the number of people visiting Padar Island in Komodo National Park, which, according to him, had become too crowded for a conservation area.

This step is aimed at ensuring tourism in Komodo National Park becomes focused and niche tourism in line with the ecotourism goals.

"Tourists are allowed to visit because they offer benefits to the local welfare. However, they must not disrupt the ecology. Thus, I will tighten the quota system for Padar," the minister remarked.
