Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian military (TNI) on Thursday provided compensation of Rp350 million ($22,000) each to the families of two soldiers who died during events marking the TNI’s 80th anniversary.

TNI Spokesperson Major General Freddy Ardianzah said the payments were made at 1:30 p.m. local time and came from state-owned insurer PT ASABRI, which covers military and police personnel.

The beneficiaries include the wife of Marine Pvt. Zaenal Mutaqim and the parents of Army Pvt. Johari Alfarizi.

“We hope this support can ease the families' burden, though no amount of money can equal their sacrifice,” said Freddy at TNI headquarters in Jakarta.

President Prabowo Subianto, TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto and other top officials expressed condolences over the deaths.

Zaenal died on October 2 during a parachute jump as part of a naval fleet parade in Jakarta Bay. He was participating in a combat simulation when the accident occurred.

Two days later, on October 4, Johari died after falling from an Army tank that was being transported for the anniversary’s main event at the National Monument (Monas) in central Jakarta.

According to Army Strategic Reserve (Kostrad) commander Lt. Gen. Mohamad Fadjar, Johari fell about four meters, suffered multiple injuries, and died en route to hospital.

Following the incidents, Gen. Subiyanto ordered a comprehensive review of this year’s anniversary events, including venue selection and safety procedures.

“We are evaluating all aspects, including safety protocols, to ensure better planning and execution next year. Our goal is zero accidents in all operations,” Freddy said.

He did not disclose specific policy recommendations but emphasized that soldier safety remains a top priority.

The deaths have raised concerns about safety during large-scale military displays, prompting calls for stricter oversight in future events.

Meanwhile, during the main ceremony of the Indonesian Armed Forces' (TNI) 80th anniversary at Monas on October 5, President Prabowo Subianto urged the military to stay prepared for all contingencies and to keep pace with global developments.

In his address at the celebration, President Prabowo warned that the TNI must never become complacent or fall behind in a rapidly changing world.

He emphasized the importance of mastering emerging technologies, particularly in cybersecurity and artificial intelligence.
