Padang, W Sumatra (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries is seeking to establish 1,000 Red and White Fishing Villages across Indonesia in 2026 to support President Prabowo Subianto's food security program.

This was confirmed by the ministry's expert staff member, Trian Yunanda, while monitoring the early-stage development of a Red and White Fishing Village in Padang Pariaman District, West Sumatra, on Wednesday.

According to him, President Prabowo wanted more fishing village development projects to be carried out to support food self-sufficiency, job creation, and village development, among other things.

For the Red and White Fishing Village development in Padang Pariaman, the government allocated Rp20 billion (around US$1.2 million), which is sourced from the state budget.

The infrastructure that is currently being developed in the fishing village includes a fuel station, cold storage, a portable ice-making plant, and a fishers center.

He explained that the fishing village development is carried out based on a proposal from regional heads submitted to the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries.

Thus, he encouraged regional heads to be proactive in proposing the development in their respective regions.

In line with the Red and White Fishing Village development, the ministry and the Padang Pariaman District Government will also provide training to cooperative groups and prospective operators of the fishing village.

Padang Pariaman District Head John Kenedy Azis expressed appreciation for the ministry's quick move in developing the Red and White Fishing Village in the district, which, he said, is expected to improve the economy of the local residents, especially fishers.

The Red and White Fishing Villages is a government priority program aimed at transforming fishing villages and traditional aquaculture to become more modern and productive with higher competitiveness.

Currently, the development of 65 Red and White Fishing Villages is underway and is expected to be completed by December 2025.
