Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan expressed optimism that Indonesia will no longer need to import salt by the end of 2027.

“Hopefully, by the end of 2027, we will have all types of salt. No more imports,” Hasan said here on Tuesday.

Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono also voiced confidence that Indonesia would achieve salt self-sufficiency by late 2027. He explained that the government is gradually reducing salt imports starting from 2025 through 2026.

“Currently, salt for consumption, industry, food processing, and pharmaceuticals is still imported. Under the coordination of Minister Hasan and the president’s order, we aim to achieve full self-sufficiency across all salt types by the end of 2027,” Trenggono said.

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries is targeting production of five million tons of salt at the National Salt Industry Center (K-SIGN) in Rote Ndao District, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province.

The K-SIGN development in Indonesia’s southernmost region is crucial since the country currently relies on imported salt. Rote Ndao is known for its high-quality salt, proven through salinity and laboratory testing.

Previously, Trenggono said the K-SIGN center has the potential to create employment for more than 26,600 people.

“I am frankly very impressed with the potential of this area, as I imagine more than 26,600 people will work in this industry,” he said during a visit to the area in June.

In addition to creating jobs for the local community, K-SIGN is expected to drive the local economy.

Trenggono added that the economic impact will extend beyond K-SIGN’s direct workforce to supporting sectors such as vendors, parking attendants, fishmongers, and others. The government has allocated Rp2 trillion or around US$120.5 million for the K-SIGN development.
