Jakarta (ANTARA) - Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva hailed Indonesia as a strategic partner for his country in advancing solidarity among developing nations of the Global South and strengthening their collective position on the global stage.

"Indonesia stands as a crucial, strategic partner for Brazil in our efforts to solidify the position of Global South countries," Lula remarked during a one-on-one meeting with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Thursday.

Bearing that in mind, he emphasized Brazil’s commitment to deepening its bilateral ties with Indonesia, particularly to open new avenues for stronger cooperation in trade and education.

Acknowledging Indonesia’s economic strength, Lula highlighted his country’s enthusiasm to foster a more robust and mutually beneficial trade partnership.

In the education field, he proposed that both governments work together to expand cooperation between universities from the two countries.

"We need to bolster ties between our universities and, most importantly, forge policies supporting balanced trade between both countries," he stated.

Lula also took the occasion to express appreciation to President Prabowo for his earlier visit to the Planalto Palace in Brasília on July 9 this year, where both leaders exchanged views on a range of shared priorities.

He described the Brasília meeting as valuable momentum for Brazil, which holds the 2025 BRICS presidency, to welcome Indonesia to the economic bloc following its accession in January this year.

The Brazilian president also expressed optimism about taking the long-standing and harmonious Indonesia–Brazil partnership to greater heights for the benefit of both nations.

"I am truly delighted to be here and hopeful that we will continue to strengthen the ties between Brazil and Indonesia," Lula remarked.

Lula visited the Merdeka Palace with a delegation of high-ranking officials, including Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, Agriculture Minister Carlos Favaro, Mines and Energy Minister Alexandre Silveira, and Central Bank President Gabriel Galipolo.

Meanwhile, Prabowo was accompanied by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Foreign Minister Sugiono, Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoedin, and Trade Minister Budi Santoso, among others.
