Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono emphasized Indonesia's support for ASEAN to step up its engagement with Myanmar to resolve the country's long-running political crisis.

Speaking at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Saturday, he stressed that the Five-Point Consensus (5PC) must remain the core reference point for addressing the situation in Myanmar, despite its limited progress so far.

The 5PC mandates include an immediate cessation of violence, provision of humanitarian assistance, and the commencement of inclusive dialogue.

"To ensure continuity and sustained engagement, Indonesia supports, in principle, the proposal for an ASEAN Special Envoy with a multi-year mandate," Sugiono remarked.

According to a statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, beyond strengthening the function of the special envoy, the Minister also conveyed Indonesia's support for the creation of an ASEAN Observer Team to monitor the elections planned in Myanmar for December.

He cautioned that ASEAN needs to carefully review the common position it will adopt regarding the planned polls, as well as the necessary response, stressing that ASEAN must remain involved because elections alone may not resolve the underlying issues in Myanmar.

"Indonesia is open to the idea of an ASEAN Observer Team, with a clear and limited mandate to observe and monitor, not to recognize or to endorse or validate the elections," he said.

Sugiono added that if a consensus on the observer team cannot be reached, ASEAN must be prepared to state its position, especially if a third party attempts to formally or legally approve the elections in Myanmar.

The minister lauded the steps taken by Malaysia as this year's ASEAN Chair, as well as the ASEAN Special Envoy, in trying to resolve the conflict in Myanmar.

The Foreign Ministers' Meeting was held as part of the 47th ASEAN Summit, taking place from October 26 to 28, 2025, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
