Jakarta (ANTARA) - A member of Commission VI of the House of Representatives (DPR), Rivqy Abdul Halim, urged the government to immediately form a task force for digital consumer protection to curb online shopping fraud.

He assessed that the Ministry of Trade, the Ministry of Communications and Digital Affairs, the Financial Services Authority (OJK), the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK), and the state-owned telecommunications company Telkom need to synergize to form this task force.

Halim underscored here on Wednesday that online shopping fraud methods have increasingly become more sophisticated.

He cited a statement from the OJK, which recorded 56,154 reports of online shopping fraud with total losses of up to Rp1 trillion (around US$59.7 million).

Given the high number of reports that consistently peak during certain periods, he believes the task force should be able to respond immediately to crimes that harm consumers.

One way to achieve this, he suggested, is for the task force to create a joint channel or platform that informs the public about ongoing online shopping fraud cases, including those currently being handled, and provides educational materials to avoid fraud.

Furthermore, he noted that the state-owned telecommunication company plays a crucial role in tightening the verification process for phone number registration in cooperation with various operators.

"For example, data used to register with a certain operator cannot be used again to register with another operator if the user is proven to have committed online shopping fraud," he remarked.

The legislator further said that the task force will be an important component that needs to be developed and included in the revision of Law Number 8 of 1999 concerning Consumer Protection.

He assured that Commission VI, along with its partners, will draft the revision of the Consumer Protection Law thoroughly and in accordance with the developments in technology and digital transaction information.
