Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian army will build temporary bridges to reconnect areas cut off by severe floods and landslides in Sumatra, Army Chief of Staff General Maruli Simanjuntak said Wednesday.

“We have prepared Bailey bridges. By Friday at the latest, eight sets will be deployed. We hope they can reconnect several critical areas,” Maruli told reporters at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base in East Jakarta.

He said the military would need several days to transport the bridge components to damaged road sections.

Once they arrive, troops will work to complete the installations as quickly as possible, he added.

“Installation will likely take about five days to a week,” Maruli said.

Maruli also said army personnel are being mobilized to support evacuations and deliver aid to flood-hit communities while the bridges are being built.

He did not specify the exact locations where the temporary structures would be installed.

Several key road links remain impassable after landslides destroyed sections of the network, including parts of Central Tapanuli in North Sumatra.

Because of the blocked routes, the government is still relying on air drops and helibox deliveries from Air Force transport aircraft to distribute emergency supplies.
